Eating My Words

A few months ago, I wrote a long post, here on this very blog, describing why I did not feel that my job as an editor included research. Well, now the time has come to eat my words because I took on a project editing an historical novel. And guess what? Editing a book with thousands of tiny details about a specific time period does indeed include a lot of research such as:

When did houses start being built with internal doors?

When were tables invented?

How long does it take to travel by foot from geographic location a to geographic location b?

It was definitely one of the more fun projects I’ve taken on, and not only because it involved a lot of historical, geeky research. It had been so long since I’ve taken time to think about things like plot and character development and literary themes. It was such a nice change from my usual academic work.

In the meantime, I also learned about new tardigrade species discovered by Danish students, medical innovations in the world of IVF and Parkinson’s Disease, and how underwater drones are being used to protect fragile artificial reefs.

It’s been a good few months for learning things.

Stay cool, breathe deep, take naps.

Go Cubbies!
