When Things Don’t Quite Work Out

Sometimes, things don’t work out and it’s disappointing and exhausting. And yet, sometimes, there is still something to be gained from the experience, and I don’t mean learning to live with failure.

This month I did some work for a client that ultimately didn’t work out. I thought I understood what the client had been looking for, but ultimately I did not. It happens. And yet, it was one of the most fun and illuminating jobs I have worked on in a long time. So even though it didn’t go the way I wanted, I still look back at it without regret.

Part of the task I was given was to interview two neuroscientists, and if you know me at all, you know that while I am bad at doing science, I really love learning science. So this was a dream come true. I had the opportunity to talk to these very smart and engaging people about the work they do both in its pure scientific and its more practical aspects. And that made me very happy.

Learning about the nature of these scientist’s work, actually gave me insight into a number of people in my life, and even helped me understand my neurotic dog a bit more. It gave me a wider perspective on human and animal behavior.

So even though ultimately I will not be continuing to work with this client, which is a bummer, I am still pretty chuffed about the whole experience.

Stay cool, take naps, read books.
